Contrary to popular belief, stylish and functional renovations or refreshers needn't cost you the roof over your head. These three projects got serious mileage from their small budgets—and won Design & Decorating Competition awards for the feat.

"Rustic Modern Bedroom Retreat"

budget bronze

This challenging budget project was to create a master bedroom retreat with a rustic modern feel. The homeowners had purchased their first house and moved from a small rental apartment. The furniture they had was functional, but did not fill their new, larger master bedroom properly. To help keep costs low we updated some of the existing pieces that were still in good shape so majority of the budget could go towards creating the stunning wood feature wall and more functional storage unit.

"Lakeside Rental Cottage"

Set among a cluster of other lakeside rental cottages, this three-bedroom, one-bathroom unit was in desperate need of an update. The client was interested in ending up with a functional and visually appealing multi-use space with a high-impact and welcoming lakeside design. While the bones of the unit were good, everything from drapery to the upholstery pieces to the accessories had to be replaced. Working with a modest budget, we sourced original art and vintage items. The clients love the result, and they love the glowing reviews from their guests even more.

"A Modern Nursery"

Previously an office, this room was the perfect space to convert into a nursery. Being the smallest room in the house, at only 80 square feet, it seemed right to house the tiniest family member here. The main features of this space were the 9’ ceilings, a south facing window and century old hardwood flooring and trim. The goal in this nursery was to keep it functional, affordable and a place that the baby could mature into (read: no pastels please!).  Must haves were a crib, change table/dresser, a rocking chair and a place to house books, toys and any other organizational items.
